Muddy paws in the hallway? 5 reasons for a paw mat instead of a doormat
Autumn means rain, leaves and wet paws. Why an ordinary doormat does little against them, and what a chenille mat does differently.
You know how it goes: the door opens, the dog is faster than you, and four wet paws leave a trail into the living room. Fetch a towel, mop the floor, start again tomorrow.
The classic doormat barely helps. Coir and needle felt are built for shoe soles that you wipe on purpose. A dog doesn't wipe anything. It just walks over it. That is where a paw mat comes in.
It works while your dog simply walks over it
The surface is made of densely packed chenille loops. With every step they give way, wrap around the paw and get between the pads. There they take up moisture and loose dirt.
You don't have to teach your dog anything. Walking over the mat is the whole routine.
The water stays in the mat, not on the parquet
Microfibre soaks up water instead of letting it bead off. So a good part of the rain a paw brings in ends up in the loops, not as a print on the floor behind.
How much depends on the size and on how wet it was outside. More area means more steps on the mat. The extra dense version has more loops per area and holds more.
It stays put, even when he storms in
A mat that slides on the first sprint through the hallway is worse than none. The backing has a non-slip coating and grips tiles, laminate and parquet.
Wash instead of scrub
At some point the mat itself gets dirty. Then shake it out, vacuum it, or put it in the washing machine at 30 °C and let it air-dry. No tumble dryer, no fabric softener, so the loops stay absorbent.
A size for every door, and for the car
33 × 50 cm fits narrow doors, 40 × 60 cm a normal front door. With 50 × 80 to 70 × 140 cm a big dog takes more steps on the mat before reaching the floor. The extra dense version comes up to 80 × 160 cm for long hallways.
Dirt rarely comes in through just one door. A second mat at the patio door or in the car boot catches it where it comes in.
What it can't do
After a run through a freshly ploughed field, no mat replaces the towel. Really thick mud needs a paw wash. It is made for everyday life: the rainy walk, wet grass, leaves and street dirt.
